THE ROCKS, AUSTRALIA'S FIRST VILLAGE

Captain Cook discovered Australia in 1770. He thought he had found the perfect harbour at Botany Bay for a new settlement. When Captain Phillip arrived with the First Fleet 18 years later in 1788 he realised the land at Botany Bay was over exposed, not suitable for growing crops and there was insufficient fresh water. The harbour was too shallow. “The location was perfect for an airport”.

Captain Phillip and crew rowed up the coast and into one of the most beautiful harbours in the world, Sydney Harbour. He raised the British flag on 26th January, 1788 in First Fleet Park and claimed the land for the British Empire.
